wow, no, not until now! that's a beautiful visual piece. the song's much more mellow & loungey than what I would have expected - another side of Strachan I suppose - he must have specifically commissioned Korey Weaver to write & perform the song?

I spent some time on the FB page & enjoyed the comments from students/ the shots of TS interacting with them. thanks for posting to the ice cubicle!

Interesting perspective, especially as I too am interested in geological time & the way human time is a whiff of condensed breath in the air compared to the "lifespan" of rivers, glaciers, stones.
Another thing that I believe co-exists with geological time, though, is responsibility between different groups of people. That applies to different groups of people who live at the same time, as well as those who are affecting the world in ways that future generations will have to deal with. When we see glacial retreat *along with* other kinds of climate change - measurable climate changes - it does seem like something to get both excited about and also activated about.
To put it another way: there needs to be a balance between our tiny understanding of geologic time, and our living in the present with our responsibilities to other currently-alive beings, both human and not.
I couldn't imagine telling my nephew, "oh it wasn't worth it to figure out how to use alternate-to-oil fuel sources because, you know, the earth has era-long evolution cycles that I can't control anyways, so - sorry about the loss of the BC coast and your childhood home along with that, plus your healthy water options." etc.

Loss of the Glacier and Ice field will present a few problems for us, however the Glacier and ice field are not remnants from the last Continental glaciation as noted in the article. ("The Athabasca Glacier, remnant of ice sheets that once enveloped the Canadian Rockies") Central Alberta 4kybp was4 degrees f warmer and much drier than now from ~6500 to 4000 years ago. The rolling hills west of Edmonton are sand Dunes. Obviously the Ice field has disappeared before and will again. The time frames we're talking about here are very short and geologically speaking insignificant. 4ky is a mere blink of an eye. So let's not get too excited.

Its always nice to see someone new enjoying their time in our (I'm from Tuk) frigid little town in the dead of winter.

"There was some comfort in hearing others coming into the grocery store and complaining about the wind – comfort because I thought, okay, maybe it’s not like this all the time, or they wouldn’t remark on it."

You say, but in reality, it wasn't just a remark. Its like that all the time! haha 8 months of solid winter, 5 months of -30, -40 (-50's with windchill) makes us complain. I've heard people in the south say "oh, but you must be used to it". We are, to a certain point, but its so damn cold all the time! haha thanks for the read :)

Hello all,

I realize this is about ice in all categories, but the story that brought me here was by goodcoldwater. About Arctic Glacier, and the fact they have never been investigated by the Competition Bureau in Canada. I am with Polar Ice, and in 2002 we complained to the Competition Bureau about them, and they did nothing, which is why we sued Arctic in Court. It was dragged out for years, and we finally won late 2007. Then they got into trouble for their actives in The States. They have plead guilty to price-fixing, had to refiance 185 million at 12%, settled several class action lawsuits, and have about 6 weeks left to refinance 90.6 million, or they may be forced into bankruptcy.

As far as I am concerned, Arctic Glacier is getting everything they deserve.
